HEPATITIS
acute hepatitis:
- There is diffuse swelling of the hepatocytes, proliferation of Kupffer cells lining the sinusoids and infiltration of the portal areas by lymphocytes and monocytes.
- The liver parenchympa may have a diffusely decreased echogenicity with accentuated brightness of the portal triads, periportal cuffing .
- Hepatomegaly and thickening (edematous) of the gallbladder wall are associated findings.
CHRONIC HEPATITIS
- In most cases the liver appears normal.
- In chronic hepatitis are also sonographically normal.
- When Chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis develops, sonography may demonstrate a coarsened echotexture and other morphologic changes of cirrhosis.
HOW TO DEFINE HEPATITIS
In acute hepatitis :
